Using this technology it is possible to repeatedly analyse the same live animal over time, instead of sacrificing many individuals to harvest and analyse tumours and organs, thus reducing the number of animals used in an experiment, and respecting the 3R principles.

Our IVIS SpectrumBL tool can be used for both bioluminescence and fluorescence in 3D.
The IVIS ® Spectrum in vivo imaging system combines 2D and 3D optical tomography in a single platform. The system uses state-of-the-art optical technology for research and development of preclinical images, ideal for non-invasive longitudinal monitoring of disease progression, cell traffic and patterns of gene expression in live animals.
Bioimaging allows for time kinetic studies on the same live animal. The alternative is to use more animals, to be sacrificed at different time points.
Mice are anaesthetised by gaseous anaesthesia (isoflurane) for up to 3-5 minutes and observed. Isoflurane is rapidly metabolised and does not cause any suffering to the animal.
