IVIS Unit

IVIS TECHNOLOGYIn vivo imaging system

IVIS is a technology that allows for molecules monitoring, analyzing the distribution of drugs, and observing the kinetics of tumour growth on in vivo animals and in a non-invasive way.

Plaisant - Animal Facility - Roma ivis unit 1Using this technology it is possible to repeatedly analyse the same live animal over time, instead of sacrificing many individuals to harvest and analyse tumours and organs, thus reducing the number of animals used in an experiment, and respecting the 3R principles.

Our IVIS SpectrumBL tool can be used for both bioluminescence and fluorescence in 3D.

FAQ

How does it work?

The IVIS ® Spectrum in vivo imaging system combines 2D and 3D optical tomography in a single platform. The system uses state-of-the-art optical technology for research and development of preclinical images, ideal for non-invasive longitudinal monitoring of disease progression, cell traffic and patterns of gene expression in live animals.

What's the alternative?

Bioimaging allows for time kinetic studies on the same live animal. The alternative is to use more animals, to be sacrificed at different time points.

Is it safe for animals?

Mice are anaesthetised by gaseous anaesthesia (isoflurane) for up to 3-5 minutes and observed. Isoflurane is rapidly metabolised and does not cause any suffering to the animal.

What are the features and benefits?
  • In vivo imaging with high sensitivity of fluorescence and bioluminescence
  • High performance (5 mice) with 23 cm field of view
  • High resolution (up to 20 microns) with 3.9 cm field of view
  • Twenty-eight high efficiency filters covering 430 – 850 nm
  • Supports spectral unmixing applications
  • Ability to distinguish multiple bioluminescent and fluorescent reporters
  • The optical switch in the fluorescent lighting path allows lighting in reflection mode or transmission mode
  • Diffuse tomographic reconstruction 3D both for fluorescence and bioluminescence
  • NIST Traceable Absolute Calibrations
  • Entrance and exit doors for gaseous anaesthesia
  • Class I lasers
